> The Museu de l’Aquarel·la (MDA)
aims to become a centre of excellence for the study of the technique
of watercolour painting. Historically, watercolour has always been
the poor relation of painting processes, although such an assertion
might well be considered as totally unfair. This has no doubt been
due to its difficulty as a technique, and the small margin of error
which can be allowed in the execution of this type of painting, which
has resulted in watercolour being so unjustly treated and so often
ignored by a large part of the cultural and artistic community.
After its founder, the artist J. Martínez Lozano, passed away
in 2006, the Museu de l’Aquarel·la set out in a new direction,
with a new project, new ideas and new commitments in mind, while at
all times respecting and giving priority to the wishes of its founder,
that the Museum and house in Llançà should become the
most powerful vehicle possible to promote the cause of watercolour
painting.
The objectives of the Museu de l’Aquarel·la are clear:
to present to Catalan and European society this technique, its history,
its characteristics and its artists, both those whose reputations
are already established and those who are yet to be recognized.
The content of the Museu is mainly made up of the work donated by
its founder, J. Martínez Lozano, but there are also works by
other watercolour artists who have been very important in Catalonia
as well as in the rest of the world, artists such as: Grau Sala, Frederic
Lloveras and Ramon Reig.
Besides the well-known masters of the past, watercolour, although
not the best-known form of modern painting, is nevertheless a technique
currently practised by many painters. Another objective of the Museu
is that of promoting and assisting those artists who research, study
and explore the use of water, colour and paper. In the Museum therefore,
we can also find work by artists who represent the vanguard in the
use of this medium: artists such as Jordà Vitó, Rosa
Permanyer, Justo Sanfelices and JM Lumbreras, to name but a few.
We therefore invite you to enter this unique place which opens its
doors to all.
