>In 2000, the Museu de l’Aquarel·la (Watercolour Museum) opened its doors to the public and since then more than six thousand people have visited. A very encouraging figure considering its location and the particular public it is directed at; thus we are not talking about a quantitive acceptance but rather a qualitative one. The public who visit the museum are either experts on the subject or laypeople purely interested in art and in admiring great watercolours. Perhaps most surprising of all is that they are prepared to travel many kilometres from France and Spain in order to contemplate these works.
You do not have to be very knowledgeable on the subject to guess that the artists’ works at this museum, in the town of Llançà, are of exceptional quality. The museum combines pieces that are of a more stereotypical nature with others that skilfully achieve, through the use of washes, representational art that is more characteristic of other techniques, and which involve considerable difficulty using the technique of watercolour. With this latest edition of the Museum’s catalogue, this quality of the exhibited work is clearly illustrated.
Llançà can boast the fact that it has the only museum in the whole of Spain that collectively exhibits work by artists from both Catalonia and other Spanish regions, dedicated exclusively to the technique of watercolour. It is the veritable pride of the 4,000 inhabitants who have thus, once again, demonstrated their great interest in all aspects of culture.
And this pride is in large part thanks to Josep Martínez Lozano, known amongst us as Pepe. A very charismatic man, who, with his emphatic way of expressing himself, lived a life full of increasingly favourable anecdotes and experiences. He was received in our town with open arms and since then, watercolour and Llançà have gone hand in hand. Six thousand visitors to the ‘Museu de l’Aquarel·la’ and this reissue of a catalogue reinforce the interest that the museum awakens and the desire to build upon this structure.
If you have the opportunity, and you have not been before, visit Llançà and the ‘Museu de l’Aquarel·la’. You will not be disappointed and you will be most welcome.
