> The official opening of the Museum took place on January 22nd,
1989, presided over by Josep Arnau, the Chairman of the Provincial
Council, the Mayor, Josep Maria Salvatella, and the artist Rafael
Santos Torroella,
The Museum came into being thanks to the generous donation of the
artist J. Martínez Lozano, who with around a hundred initial
works, ensured the creation and establishment of this project focused
on the world of watercolour.
As a result of his concern and interest, Martínez Lozano took
trouble to make sure that watercolour would not become the forgotten
sister of painting techniques. Indeed, quite the opposite has occurred
through his constant efforts to diffuse and promote his own techniques,
and since 1990 National Watercolour symposia have been held throughout
the country. The first three took place in Llançà and
since then they have been held in different Spanish towns and cities,
the last having taken place in Cordoba, followed by a continuation
of organized events up until 2011 within the specific field of pictorial
technique.
Ever since its very beginnings, other works have been introduced and
the content of the Museum has grown. Mainly through bequests, donations
and by way of other channels, shape has been given to what today constitutes
the artistic heart of the collection. In 2001, the artist made a new
donation of works to the Museu de l’Aquarel.la; pieces which
form part of the overall permanent exhibition.
Since May 22nd, 1999 the headquarters of the Foundation has been the
Casa de Cultura (Cultural Centre) in the town of Llançà.
Particularly noteworthy among the collection of works by great artists
from the world of painting are well-known figures such as: Ramon Reig
(Martínez Lozano’s friend and teacher), Lloveras, Santos
Torroella, Sibecas, Grau Sala, Vayreda Canadell, Roca Delpech, Joaquim
Torroella, Fresquet and Danès Jordi.
